Supervisors and the EAP

Supervisors play an important role in connecting employees to EAP services.  Supervisors may refer employees to the EAP in two ways:

Informal Referrals are reminders and information about the EAP that supervisors provide to an employee when the employee has shared with them a personal concern or stress.

Formal Referrals are the supervisor's recommendation to an employee that they use the EAP. In this situation the employee's job performance is unsatisfactory. The supervisor recommends the employee explore with the EAP whether any personal stresses are negatively impacting job performance and, if so, address those stresses through the EAP.

EAP Consultants' staff members are available to consult with you and Human Resources staff to:

  • Decide whether an employee's situation is appropriate for referral to the EAP
  • Plan a supportive and constructive discussion of job performance problems and the referral to the EAP
  • Coordinate follow up between you, the EAP and others involved in assisting the employee.
